Swedish aspen – a renewable resource

At Tordenskjold, we place a high priority on learning from nature and understanding the principles and needs that create the conditions for preserving it in a healthy and stable state. More than 90 percent of Tordenskjold's matches and matchboxes are made from renewable materials.

A full 70% of Sweden's land area is covered by deciduous forest. Among the various trees is the aspen, and the growth of Swedish aspen exceeds consumption. All Tordenskjold matches are produced in Sweden and are made from local aspen. A single trunk yields approximately 370,000 matches, which would take an average consumer around 1,000 years to use up.

Two trees for every tree

For every tree felled in Sweden, at least two new ones are planted. The forest stock has doubled in less than 100 years, making Sweden's forests a sustainable and renewable resource. Processing and using the trees further contributes to preserving the carbon they store while growing, because trees that die naturally and then decompose release the stored carbon back into nature.

“Aspen trees, along with other trees, are a natural part of Swedish deciduous forests.
The growth of Swedish aspen trees exceeds consumption.”

To further reduce our carbon footprint, goods are transported by train wherever possible. At Tordenskjold, we are deeply rooted in our history, while at the same time, through innovation, education, regeneration, and leadership, we are confident that we are heading toward a bright future. On nature's terms.
